SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team salvaged a split against Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday with an extra-inning victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Lady Bison Field in Shawnee, Okla.
Â
OBU earned its first win over the Hillcats this season with a 3-1 victory in the opener. RSU avoided the sweep with a 4-3 win in the nightcap. The Cats scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to claim the regular season series victory over the Lady Bison, 3-1. RSU swept OBU in the schools' first meeting of 2010 in Claremore on March 2.
GAME ONE
Â
The Bison scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to post the victory in game one. RSU starter Tye Coats walked the first two batters of the inning and allowed both runners to score on a wild pitch that caromed off the backstop and into the dugout.
Â
The Hillcats were held scoreless over the final three innings as Sonya Beach picked up the complete-game victory. Her only blemish was a solo homer by Linsey Curtis in the top of the fourth inning. Curtis tallied two of the Cats five hits in the contest.
Â
Coats took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits. She allowed four walks and struck out three as RSU lost its seventh consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference contest.
GAME TWO
Â
An eighth-inning error proved costly for the Bison as the Hillcats took advantage of the late miscue and stole the nightcap. Coats raced home from second base on a two-out error by the OBU shortstop with the decisive run.
Â
Coats (16-11) pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the eighth to ensure the victory. The junior right-hander gave up three runs on seven hits over eight innings. Reliever Cassidi Henderson suffered the loss for the Lady Bison.
Â
RSU took a one-run lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Marie Gaudet reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Curtis. Freshman Jodi Patterson followed with a two-run homer to centerfield. OBU tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fifth. However, Coats held the Bison hitless over the final three innings.
