Softball Cats Win Two at Border War Tournament

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team experienced an array of emotions during the first day of the Border War Tournament Friday at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.

The Hillcats earned a walk-off win against Bacone College, walked past Tabor College in a blowout, and lost in extra innings to Evangel University, all in the span of 12 hours.

GAME ONE (vs. Bacone)

Freshman Shelby Brogdon ripped an RBI single to left-field in the bottom of the seventh to beat Bacone, 6-5 in the opener Friday morning.

Brogdon's game-winner was the only RSU run not produced via the long ball. The Cats took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Linsey Curtis's 17th homer of the season. Bacone cut the lead to one with two runs in the top of the third, but Brogdon answered with a two-run blast in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Warriors cut into the lead again with two runs in the fifth and tied the score at 5-5 with a run in the top of the seventh. Ashlie Fauchier worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, stole second base, and trotted home with the decisive run on Brogdon's single.

Tye Coats earned the pitching victory after giving up five runs on seventh hits. Chrissy Hood took the loss for Bacone.

GAME TWO (vs. Tabor)

RSU scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings and rolled to an 11-0 victory over Tabor College in five-innings.

The Cats tallied five straight hits in the bottom of the first inning as Marie Gaudet, Jodi Patterson and Katie Bointy swatted RBI singles. Brogdon and Curtis added to the lead with run-scoring hits in the second and Logan Zamora slapped a two-run single up the middle in the third.

Brogdon led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to centerfield and Coats capped the scoring with a two-run double off the top of the centerfield wall. Coats earned her second pitching victory of the day with four innings of work. Katie Bointy worked a scoreless fifth in her first pitching performance of the season.

GAME THREE (vs. Evangel)

The Hillcats battled back from an early deficit to force extra innings before a three-run ninth inning gave Evangel an 8-6 win in the final game of the day.

Hannah Somers crushed an opposite-field homer in the top of the ninth that proved to be the difference. RSU brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the inning before a double-play and a hard lineout ended the rally.

The Cats trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the third inning. Gaudet crushed a two-run double to left to make it a one-game. The Crusaders tacked on a run in the top of the sixth, but RSU came right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Brittany White slapped a two-run single up the middle with two outs to knot the game at 4-4.

Both teams plated a run in the eighth, but Somers' three-run bomb proved to be too much for the Hillcats to overcome in the ninth. Tori Sizemore earned the win for Evangel with 3.1 innings of relief while Coats (19-12) took the loss in a complete-game performance.

Rogers State (25-14) returns to action Saturday at the Hillcat Complex for day two of the Border War Tournament. RSU will play Kansas Wesleyan at 9 a.m. and Culver-Stockton at 1 p.m.
