CLAREMORE, Okla. - With their backs squarely against the wall, the Rogers State Hillcats came out swinging and posted a doubleheader sweep over Oklahoma Christian Tuesday at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.
Â
The Diamond Cats needed two wins to stay alive in the hunt for a postseason berth. They grabbed the opener with a 3-1 victory behind a stellar pitching effort from Grant Cosby. RSU completed the sweep with a come-from-behind, 7-5 victory in the nightcap. The Hillcats can clinch a spot in next week's Sooner Athletic Conference tournament with a win in the regular season finale Thursday at OC.
GAME ONE
Â
Cosby spearheaded the Cats' victory in game one with a sparkling outing in his final appearance at the Hillcat Complex. A four-year member of the RSU baseball program, the right-hander allowed just one unearned run over seven innings to go out a winner on Senior Day.
Â
The Hillcats struck first with a run in the second inning. Colton West singled to right and Billy Balak followed with a two-out RBI knock to left. The Eagles tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but the Cats answered with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Brandt Barnes worked a leadoff walk and scored the go-ahead run on a double by Zach Hamby. West plated Hamby with a single up the middle to reach the final margin. West tallied two of RSU's five hits in the contest.
Â
Kennedy Winn (2-7) was tagged with the loss for OC after giving up three runs on five hits over six innings. Cosby (8-3) earned the win and struck out five without yielding a walk.
GAME TWO
Â
RSU took the Eagles best shot in the nightcap and kept on swinging with a late rally to complete the sweep.
Â
OC trailed 3-1 before grabbing the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. The Eagles loaded the bases with two hits and a walk before Taylor Parcus cleared them with a three-run triple down the right-field line. Parcus scored on a sacrifice fly by Dillon Andrews to make it 5-3.
Â
However, the Cats responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim the lead for good. Lance Rymel drew a leadoff walk and Barnes followed with an infield single. Senior Luis Caraballo delivered a two-run double up the middle to tie the game and scored the go ahead run on a bunt-single by West. RSU tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Radford doubled and scored on a sac fly by Rymel.
Â
Senior Rob Rodriguez gave the Hillcats an early lead with an RBI single in the second inning. West extended the margin with a solo home run into the teeth of a strong wind in the fourth. The junior third baseman finished the afternoon 4 for 6 with three RBI.
Â
Tyler Garner (8-5) earned the pitching victory with a complete-game performance. He allowed five runs on four hits with six strikeouts and just two walks. Brady Hamar (4-4) took the loss for OC after yielding seven runs, five earned, on eight hits over six innings.
