CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State women's basketball was unable to complete a comeback over Friends University on Saturday afternoon, falling 75-68 on Homecoming at the Claremore Expo.
With 5:19 remaining in the contest the Hillcats trailed by 10 points. RSU rallied with a 7-0 run to make the game interesting. Gianna Woods started the comeback by putting away a pair of free throws. Senior Sasha Barnes got the crowd on their feet by draining a 3-pointer, forcing a turnover and converting a layup to cut the Falcons lead to 69-66. However, sharp shooting and solid defense down the stretch was key to Friends victory as their final six points came from the line and they held the Hillcats to a pair of free throws.
The Falcons largest lead of the afternoon came in the seventh minute as Sarah Munds drained a three pointer to stretch the lead to 11 points. Leah Smith countered with a trey of her own to cut the lead back down to eight but RSU struggled from long distance, shooting just 22 percent.
The teams traded buckets to open the half. The Falcons clung to the lead for good with 12:33 to play in the first half with a 3-pointer by Abbey Fawcett.
The Hillcats chipped away at the deficit throughout the game, keeping it in single digits throughout the contest. The Hillcats struggled from the field shooting just 33 percent and shot 70 percent from the free throw line.
Fawcett and Munds combined for 55 points to lead the Falcons. Fawcett led all scorers with 30 points. Junior Logan Froese tallied a double-double to lead the Hillcats with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Sasha Barnes was the only other Hillcat to score in double digits with 10 points.
Rogers State (2-2) returns to action at the Claremore Expo on Tuesday to face Baker University at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
