Hillcats Clip Golden Eagles in SAC Tournament Opener, 2-0

SILOAM SPRING, Ark.- A pair of first half goals spurred the Rogers State men's soccer team past John Brown University 2-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Hillcats crashed the goal right from the start. Their first scoring opportunity came in the second minute of play off a corner kick; however JBU goalkeeper Pablo Garcia made an impressive save to keep the game scoreless.

Five minutes later, RSU had another scoring opportunity as a Ryan Coffman header hit the post. The Hillcats continued to earn scoring chances. Freshman Mohammed Shaban broke through the Golden Eagle defense in the 13th minute but fired a shot over the crossbar.

Senior Henrique Sousa broke the scoreless tie and put the Cats on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute of play as he converted a penalty kick.

Justin Friesen doubled the Hillcats advantage in the 24th minute. Senior Griffin Kane blasted a shot and a JBU defender deflected it away from goal but Friesen was there to put the ball in the back of the net.

The Golden Eagles best chance of the half came in the 31st minute when they fired a shot off the crossbar. RSU took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Hillcat defense held the Golden Eagles to just one shot on goal in the second frame. Freshman Jeremy Swift earned the shutout victory, making three saves. RSU fired 14 shots in the game with six shots on goal.

With the win, the Hillcats move on to the conference semifinals against second-seeded Lubbock Christian. The Chaps defeated Oklahoma Christian 4-0 to advance to the round of four.

Rogers State (11-7-1, 5-4-1) will travel to LCU on Monday to face the Chaps in the semifinals at 2 p.m.
