BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Rogers State women's basketball team stretched its winning streak to two games to start the 2011-12 campaign with an 81-66 victory over host Baker University at the 2011 Baker Wildcat Classic Saturday at George F. Collins, Jr. Sports & Convention Center.
The victory wasn't quite the breeze that coach Amy Williams would have liked from her squad. After opening the game with a 9-0 start topped by a second chance bucket by Gianna Woods the Hillcats closed out the first half leading 40-21.
The second half is when the slight roller coaster ride began for RSU. The Wildcats opened the second stanza outscoring RSU 29-11 in the first 10 minutes of the period to trim the Hillcat lead to 51-50 with a quarter of the game remaining.
After a 3-pointer by Gloria Atanmo tied the game for BU at 59-59 with 6:32 to go, RSU answered big. The Hillcats allowed just one point over the next four minutes while posting 17 points capped by a Larrielle Giles field goal off an assist by Leah Smith, started by a Sierra Cornwell steal. As RSU closed out the game and claimed the 81-66 victory.
Rogers State (2-0) shot 51.7 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from the field. The Hillcats struggled from the charity stripe hitting 12-of-22. RSU forced BU into 34 turnovers while the Hillcats out rebounded the Wildcats 38-32.
Baker (0-3) was off the mark in the field hitting only 37.5 percent while knocking down 42.9 percent from behind the arc. The Wildcats were impressive from the free throw line converting on 72 percent. Alisha Fanshier led the Wildcats with 20 points.
Woods led all scorers with 22 points and recorded her first double-double as a Hillcat pulling in 10 boards. Leah Smith was the only other Hillcat to hit double figures scoring with 15 points. Sasha Barnes nabbed five steals while Sierra Cornwell grabbed six steals and added nine points.
RSU will continue the string of road games with a trip to Langston, Okla. to face Langston University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Live audio streaming will be provided on www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
