PLAINVIEW, Texas - Rogers State men's basketball showed it could win a low scoring contest Thursday night, defeating Wayland Baptist 56-44 inside the Hutcherson Center. The No. 25 Hillcats stretched its winning streak to seven with the win over the Pioneers.
The two teams combined to score 37 points in the opening half. WBU and RSU were both sloppy in the opening period as both shot 33 percent from the field. John Boyd led all scorers in the first half, dropping in eight of the Hillcats 19 total points. At halftime RSU led 19-18.
RSU opened the second half on a 13-4 stretch capped off by a Boyd tip-in on a Larry Cox miss at the 14:25 mark. The Hillcats were able to build the lead slowly to 17 over the next ten minutes. After a Nathan Harbour lay-up, Maurice Rutherford converted a conventional 3-point play with 3:10 remaining to give Coach Justin Barkley's team its largest lead at 54-36. WBU closed the game out on a 6-2 run as Barkley cleared his bench in the final minutes and RSU came away victorious 56-44.
The win was the fewest points for the Hillcats in a victory this season and the fewest points allowed by RSU all season. After shooting 1-of-9 in the first half from long distance, RSU finished the game shooting 33 percent on 5-of-15 shooting.
Boyd led all scorers with 18 points. Matt Kellogg added in 12 points and Deveric Taylor came off the bench with 10 points. RSU shot 61 percent from the charity stripe while the Pioneers hit 80 percent from the free shot line.
Wayland Baptist (8-20, 3-18) was led in the scoring column by Bobby Watkins with 17. Nathan Harbour contributed 14 points in the loss. Six Pioneers scored as WBU tallied a season lowing for points.
Rogers State (19-9, 15-6) closes out the Texas Two-Step and the regular season on Saturday facing Lubbock Christian inside the Rip Griffin Center. RSU Radio 91.3FM will broadcast the game with tip-time set for 3 p.m.
