CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games after a doubleheader sweep over McPherson College (Kan.) on Friday afternoon at Hillcat Complex.
The Cats compiled five runs in the first two innings in the opener and cruised to a 7-0 victory behind solid pitching performances from sophomores
Casey Cassity and
Frensly Martina. The Hillcats ran away with the nightcap as they plated five runs in the first inning en route to a 14-4 run-rule in five innings.
Game OneThe Hillcats used nine hits to post seven runs in the first game of the day as the Cats posted a 7-0 victory.
Senior
Colton West got things rolling for the Cats in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo shot over the right field fence.
Cassity retired the side in the top of the second and the Cats tacked on four runs in the bottom of the inning to give RSU a 5-0 lead.
Kevin Radford led off the inning with a double to left field.
Billy Balak followed with a single to right-center and Radford scored. With the bases loaded, junior
Cade McKewon was hit by a pitch which allowed Balak to advance home. West drove the final two runs of the inning in off a single down the right field line.
Radford scored on a fielder's choice in the third to push the lead to 6-0.
Jairo Valdez drove in the final run of the opener in the sixth with a double to right that scored
Hamilton Hernandez who was pinch-running for Balak.
The pitching staff allowed just three hits in the game as Cassisty improves to 3-0 on the season. The Barnsdall, Okla. native tossed five scoreless innings, fanning two while allowing two hits. Martina closed out the game, pitching two scoreless innings. He struck out one and allowed one hit.
GAME TWORSU dominated on offense in the nightcap as the Cats tagged three Bulldog pitchers for 15 hits in the 14-4 rout.
Senior
Brandt Barnes ignited the offense with a leadoff single to left field. West hit a double to right field and plated Barnes.
Randy Ramirez followed with a walk and
Cody Campbell belted a three-run home run to give the Hillcats a 4-0 edge going into the second.
Jordan Clark fanned three straight batters in the top of the second and the Cats added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase the lead to 6-0.
The Bulldogs cut their deficit in half in the top of the third as they plated three runs. However, the Hillcats countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Joe Manbohd doubled to right field and sent
Keith Poverud across home plate. Manbohd scored on a wild pitch by Tad Jones.
MC continued to chip away at the Cats lead with a little help from some RSU fielding errors as the Bulldogs posted one unearned run in the fourth. The Cats pushed the game out of reach in the bottom half of the inning as they used six hits to score five runs. The final run of the game came off a double by Poverud that sent Ramirez home to complete the 14-4 run-rule.
Clark tossed three innings allowing four hits and three runs with five strikeouts.
Jim Miner closed out the contest with two innings of relief as he earned his first win of the season. The Tecumseh, Okla. native allowed one unearned run and fanned four batters.
