CLAREMORE, Okla.- The Rogers State softball team combined for 49 hits and 30 RBI with nine home runs as they swept both Bacone College and Oklahoma Wesleyan at Hillcat Complex.
The Cats opened the afternoon with a pair of run-rule victories over Bacone. RSU won the opener 8-0 in five innings and swept the series with a 9-1 run-rule in game two. The Hillcats continued the domination in the night cap as they cruised to a 8-0 win in five innings in the opener against Oklahoma Wesleyan and closed out the series with a 5-1 victory in the finale.
Each game was played in less than one hour and 15 minutes. The four games were played in a combined four hours and 34 minutes.
GAME ONE
The Hillcats belted a pair of home runs in the bottom of the second to take an early 3-0 lead over Bacone. Taran Threet led off the inning with a double off the wall in left field. Sophomore Linsey Curtis followed with a home run belted over the center field fence. Katie Bointy blasted a solo shot over the center field fence to extend the lead. The homer was the first of the season for the senior third baseman.
The Cats continued to add runs with the long ball in the third inning as Amanda Edwards led off with a solo homer over the center field fence.
A big fifth inning by RSU brought the game to an end early. Katrina Loy led off the inning with a double. Threet followed with a triple to plate Ashlee Dillman who came in to pinch run for Loy. Curtis belted her second home run of the game which scored Threet and pushed the Cats lead to 7-0. Shelby Brogdon singled up the middle and reached third on a double by Katie Bointy. Senior Logan Zamora ended the game with a single to shallow left field that sent Brogdon across home plate as the Cats registered an 8-0 run-rule.
Junior Ashley Wailand (7-2) tossed the complete game shutout and garnered the win in the circle. The Davenport, Iowa native allowed just two hits and one walk while fanning three hitters.
Curtis finished the game 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored. Threet was also perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
GAME TWO
The Cats worked quickly in game two as well, defeating the Lady Warriors, 9-1 in five innings. Freshman Kirsten Leppla put the Cats on the board first with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
The Cats increased their led to 3-0 in the third with back-to-back solo home runs by Threet and Curtis. Bacone recorded its lone run of the afternoon with a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth.
The Cats continued to pour on the offense in the bottom of the fourth with a first-pitch two-run homer by Zamora over the left field fence.
Leading 5-1, the Cats ended the game early with four runs on five hits in the fifth. Brogdon doubled down the left field line to score Threet. Leppla followed with a single that allowed Cutis to score. Fauchier doubled off the wall in right field and Brogdon scored. With runners on second and third, Zamora hit a sacrifice fly to left field that sent Angelina Vines home for the run-rule.
Sophomore Amanda Edwards (8-1) earned the win in the circle for the Hillcats. The sophomore tossed the complete game, allowing two hits and one run with three strikeouts.
Threet paced the Cats offense as she went 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
GAME THREE
The Cats scored early and often against Oklahoma Wesleyan in game one. RSU jumped out to an early lead as they tagged OWU pitcher Katie
Kelley with six runs in the bottom of the first. Fauchier led off the inning with a single and Zamora followed with a walk. Edwards cranked her second home run of the day and sixth of the season to give the Hillcats a 3-0 advantage. Loy then singled and Kelley walked Curtis and Ortiz to load the bases. Bointy walked and plated Loy. Vines doubled off the wall in right-center field to plate Ortiz and Curtis. RSU led 6-0 going into the second inning.
Back-to-back doubles by Edwards and Loy added one run to the Hillcats total in the second. Edwards blasted a solo shot over the center field fence in the fourth to push the score to 8-0.
Wailand retired the side in the top of the fifth to complete the run-rule. The junior right-handed hurler tossed a complete game shutout, allowing three hits while striking out six.
Edwards and Loy both went 3-for-3 in the contest. Edwards belted a pair of home runs with four RBI. Vines went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
GAME FOUR
The finale against OWU was the only game of the day that went the complete seven innings and it was the only contest without a home run.
The Hillcats used two hits and some help from an OWU error to record the first run of the game in the bottom of the first.
The Lady Eagles knotted the score in the top of the third with an RBI single by Macy Wright. However, RSU responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs. With the bases loaded, Brogdon doubled down the left field line which sent Edwards and Threet across home plate. Bointy followed with a single that scored Curtis and Dillman rounded out the scoring with a single up the middle that plated Brogdon.
The four runs in the third was all the insurance Edwards (9-1) needed in the circle as she earned the win. She tossed the complete game, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout. Edwards contributed to her own cause as she went 3-for-4 from the plate with one run scored.
Ashlee Dillman was perfect from the plate, going 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Rogers State (17-3) returns to action this weekend as they participate in the McPherson Tournament in McPherson, Kan. on Friday and Saturday.
