No. 1 Stars Squeak Past No.25 Hillcats, 70-57

Claremore, Okla. - The No. 25 Rogers State women's basketball team gave No. 1 ranked Oklahoma City University a scare on Thursday night at the Claremore Expo as the Stars came away with the 70-57 victory.

The Hillcats hung with the Stars throughout the first frame. Junior Leah Smith gave the Hillcats a 26-25 lead with 2:47 to play in the first half with a pair of made free throws. OCU tied the game with 15 seconds to play in the half and RSU followed with a turnover that allowed them one final shot with nine seconds remaining. Desiree Jeffries drained a contested three pointer at the buzzer to give OCU a 33-30 lead at the break.

OCU clung to its single-digit lead for most of the second half. With less than 11 minutes to play, Smith hit a layup and drained a trey on the Hillcats next possession to knot the game at 44 points.  The Hillcats tied the contest one final time with 8:30 to play but the Stars used an 8-0 run to gain control of the lead and sealed the win with free throws down the stretch.

Gianna Woods and Smith led the Hillcats with 12 points apiece. Sierra Cornwell was the only other RSU player to finish in double digits with 10 points. Five OCU players finished in double digits led by Desiree Jeffries with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hillcats held the unbeaten Stars (12-0, 7-0) to 4-of-23 from long distance and 37 percent from the field.  RSU shot 81 percent from the charity stripe while converting just 32 percent from the field and 33 percent from long distance.

No. 2 ranked Union (Tenn.) is the only team who has held the Stars to fewer points as OCU scored 69 points against the Lady Bulldogs. OCU came away with a 69-57 win over Union on Nov. 26, 2011. OCU's average margin of victory in conference play is 41 points as they have registered a flawless 7-0 record.
