CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 4-0 win over Missouri Baptist on Friday night at Soldier Field on RSU's Claremore campus.
RSU dominated the offensive attack as the Hillcats out-shot the Spartans 21-1. Four different Hillcats tallied goals on the night and sophomore Jianna Piela scored the team's first goal of the season to put the Cats on top 1-0 at the half.
Just before halftime, Tara Garrett fired a shot on goal but MBU goalkeeper Sam Schulze was there to make a great save. However, she couldn't hold onto the ball and Piela put it in the back of the net.
Junior Melissa Subu set the pace in the second half as she buried the ball in the back of the net, just under the cross bar in the 55th minute.
Minutes later, freshman Taylor Hallford dribbled through the defense and slotted the ball back post to give RSU a 3-0 lead. It was the Sand Springs, Okla. native's first collegiate goal.
Raquel Chavez also netted her first goal in Hillcat red and blue as the redshirt freshman rounded out the scoring in the 68 minute of play. Hallford dribbled to the end line and crossed the ball into the box where Chavez knocked it past the keeper on the near post.
The Hillcat defense denied the Spartans a shot on goal in the match. RSU blast 12 shots on goal in the contest as Schulze registered seven saves.
Jordan Harris started in goal for the Hillcats and Sarah Schneider played keeper for the final 21 minutes of the game.
Rogers State (1-0) will return to action on Sunday as the Cats travel to Tulsa to take on NCAA Division I opponent Oral Roberts at 7 p.m.
