War Hawks Storm Past Hillcats, 5-3

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State women's soccer team was unable to weather the storm on Monday afternoon as McMurry (Texas) tallied a 5-3 win over the Hillcats amidst a torrential downpour at Soldier Field.  

The War Hawks took an early lead in the eighth minute of the game as Aleria Luna converted a free kick from 25 yards out. Two minutes later, the War Hawks doubled their lead as Paige Harwell buried the ball just under the crossbar off a defensive deflection.  

RSU was unable to capitalize on one of its six shots in the opening half has the War Hawks took their 2-0 lead into the locker room at intermission.

Defensive miscues plagued the Hillcats in the second stanza.  McM took a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute of the game. RSU struggled to clear the ball in traffic within the box, resulting in an own goal by the Hillcats. The War Hawks tallied their fourth goal of the season in the 66th minute of the game as Kristen Grant intercepted the ball from the defense and beat the goalkeeper one-versus-one in the lower right corner of the goal.

The Hillcats tallied a trio of goals in the final 25 minutes of the game. Tara Garrett got things started, slotting the ball back post off a pass across the middle of the box by Melissa Subu.  Haley Wenlock converted a PK in the 75th minute and the momentum shifted towards RSU. However, the War Hawks quickly silence the run with a goal by Kristen Grant a minute later.

Carley Johnson kept the Hillcat hopes alive in the 85th minute as she headed the ball past the keeper near post off a set piece by Taylor Hallford. The Hillcats came up short in the final five minutes, falling by two goals.

RSU pounded the goal in the second frame, tallying 19 shots in the second half. The Cats out-shot the War Hawks 25 to 12 in the contest while taking 11 corner kicks compared to McM who took just one in the contest.

Jordan Harris took the loss in goal for RSU allowing five goals while making five saves. Anissa Arenas made several impressive saves for the War Hawks, earning the win with seven saves while allowing three goals.

Rogers State (1-9, 0-4 HC) will return to action on Wednesday as the Hillcats head to Joplin, Mo. to face Missouri Southern at 6 p.m.
