Dallas, Texas- The Rogers State men's soccer team lost its final Heartland Conference road match on Monday afternoon as Dallas Baptist handed the Hillcats a 5-2 loss.
Although the Patriots only out-shot RSU 14-13 in the opening half, DBU took a 3-0 lead into the locker room at the break. Brandon O'Donnovan got things started in the 16th minute of the game with his first goal of the season. With the early momentum on their side, the Patriots added a goal less than three minutes later as Seth Elliot buried the ball in the back of the net.
Cameron Gilbert gave DBU a 3-0 lead just before halftime with a header sent past the goalkeeper on the backside. RSU put its first goal on the scoreboard with some help from DBU as the Patriots committed an own goal to make it a 3-1 game in the 49th minute of play. Riley Avery followed his own shot in the 49th minute and beat the RSU goalkeeper to take back the three-goal lead.
Niall Masterson cut the DBU lead to 4-2 in the 71st minute as he fired a free kick upper 90 back side from 40 yards out. However, the Patriots sealed the win with a Brian Robertson goal in the 82nd minute.
The Hillcats out-shot the Patriots 14-8 in the second frame and took 15 corner kicks on the day. DBU keeper Mason Stringer made 10 saves en route to his third win of the season in goal.
Mitchell Penton took the loss in goal for RSU, allowing five goals while making six saves.
Rogers State (5-9-1, 3-5) returns to Soldier Field on Friday night for their final home stand of the season as they face regional rival Oklahoma Wesleyan at 3 p.m. and round out the weekend with senior day on Saturday against Newman (Kan.) at 5 p.m. The games will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
