Softball Cats Take Title at David Fillmore Memorial Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Rogers State softball team registered five wins en route to winning the David Fillmore Memorial Tournament, hosted by Evangel (Mo.) on Friday and Saturday.

The Hillcats remain undefeated on the season (27-0) with the 5-0 weekend but needed late inning heroics on more than one occasion to keep the record perfect. On Friday, RSU tallied a 7-1 win over Cardinal Stretch and a 5-0 win over Ottawa (Kan.) before defeating Midland College in dramatic come-from-behind fashion with a grand slam by Shelby Brogdon to give the Cats a 11-7 win. The Hillcats used a 4-2 win over Sooner Atheltic Conference foe USAO to send them to the Championship. RSU earned the tournament title with a 5-2 win over Midland in the title game.

GAME ONE vs. Cardinal Stritch (Wis.)

The Hillcats dented the scoreboard first with a two RBI single by Shona Guerrero in the top of the third frame. RSU added three more runs in the fourth on one hit and one error.

CSU found its way onto the scoreboard in the in the bottom of the fourth. Skye Riddle hit a one-out double and scored on a groundout by Arianna Bazelon to give RSU a 5-1 advantage.

Two errors by CSU allowed the Hillcats to tack on a run in sixth. In the seventh, Niki Keck led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Tori Fitch to complete the 7-1 win.

Laura Fleck earned the win as she tossed five innings, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. Linsey Curtis closed out the game with two scoreless innings of work in the circle.

GAME TWO vs. Ottawa (Kan.)  

The Hillcats posted four early runs and held on for the 5-0 win over Ottawa. Megan Williams used a RBI single down the right field line to send Guerro home and give RSU a 1-0 lead in the second.  

In the third with bases loaded, Guerrero belted a double into the right-center field gap to send two runs home. Consecutive sacrifice squeeze bunt by Taran Threet and Desiree Ayarzagoitia gave RSU for runs in the inning and a 5-0 lead.

Fleck went the distance in the circle, earning the shutout victory. The sophomore allowed just one hit and one walk with eight strikeouts.    

GAME THREE vs. Midland (Neb.)

The Hillcats clawed their way to victory in the final game of the day on Friday. RSU trailed 7-6 going into the top of the seventh. With the win streak on the line the Hillcats delivered. Guerrero and Threet opened the inning with consecutive singles and Ayarzagoitia walked to load the bases. With one out Shelby Brogdon came in the game to pinch hit, belting the ball over the left field fence. The grand slam gave the Hillcats a10-7 lead. RSU kept the offense going as Jamie King followed with a single and scored on a double by Candace Monigold.

RSU faced the minimum in the top of the seventh to earn the 11-7 win.

The Cats opened the first frame with two runs off a two-RBI double by Guerrero but Midland answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

RSU tied the score in the top of the second with a two-run home run by King and took the lead in the fourth with a RBI ground out by Toni Shurtliff. RSU added to the lead in the fourth with a RBI single by Monigold but MU tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Midland took a one run lead in the bottom of the fifth with the help of two RSU errors.

Fleck registered the complete game victory in the circle, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits.

GAME FOUR vs. USAO

The Hillcats faced a familiar conference opponent on Saturday morning as RSU defeated USAO 4-2, sending them to the championship game.

RSU took a 2-0 lead in the third with an RBI fielder's choice by Guerrero and a sacrifice fly by Threet. USAO tied the game in the top of the six with a leadoff home run by Ashley Rasovic and a RBI single Morgan Bratcher.

Shurtliff gave the Hillcats the lead in the bottom of the sixth frame with a two-run home run over the right field fence. The home run proved to be the difference as RSU held the Drovers scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Fleck tallied the complete game win in the circle, allowing two runs on 10 hits while fanning two batters.  

GAME FIVE vs. Midland (Neb.)

The Hillcats faced Midland in the championship game at the tournament. RSU started the game with an early two run lead in the bottom of the first frame. King lead off the inning with a single to right-center field and scored on a double off the right field wall by Monigold. Threet hit a RBI single to send Monigold home and give RSU a 2-0 advantage.

MU cut the Cats lead in half in the top of the second with a RBI single by Matti Petersen. RSU made it a 3-1 game in the third with a RBI ground out by Katrina Loy. The Hillcats pushed the advantage to 5-1 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by King and an error by Midland allowed Shurtiff to score later in the inning.

Midland managed one run in the top of the fifth but the Hillcats held on through the final two innings, earning a 5-2 win and the tournament title.

Fleck earned all five wins on the weekend. The Muskogee, Okla. native allowed two runs on five hits in the title game with two strikeouts.  

Rogers State (27-0) returns to action on Monday as they travel to Bryon College in Dayton, Tenn. The twin bill is set for 2 p.m.
