WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Rogers State softball team dropped two games in its 2014 debut at the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational Friday falling 9-1 to host Midwestern State University in five innings and 4-2 to Cameron University.
The Hillcats got behind early in both games starting in the first inning against MSU allowing one run before two more scored in the second. The Mustangs took advantage of two walks and an error for a quick 3-0 lead on RSU starter Yolanda Rios.
MSU tallied three runs in the fourth as Baylee Voigt started the inning hitting a pinch-hit home run on the first pitch and later extended the lead to 6-0.
RSU got one run back in the top of the fifth as Toni Shurtliff hit a sharp RBI single into right field scoring Jackie Flores from second base.
The Mustangs closed out the run-rule win with a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame.
The Hillcats again were forced to play from behind in the second game as Cameron scratched across two runs in the third inning against freshman Brooklyne Harbert, who made her collegiate debut pitching for RSU.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Harbert helped the Hillcats claw back into the game blasting the first RSU home run of the season and the first of the career for the Fountain, Colo., native cutting the deficit to 3-2.
The Aggies made it 4-2 in the top of the seventh getting a run off Rios, who pitched great in relief for the final 3.1 innings, but RSU could not come back despite having the tying run at the plate in the last inning.
