WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Rogers State softball team out-hit Midwestern State but four errors in the second inning cost the Hillcats the game in a 5-2 loss in the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational finale Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
Freshman pitcher Brooklyne Harbert threw a great game holding the Mustangs to four hits over six innings but the defense had a short lapse that proved costly.
MSU's first batter of the game was hit by a pitch and later scored before extending the lead to 4-0 after the second with three unearned runs. The margin went to 5-0 following a lead-off solo home run by Katy Vandewater in the third inning.
The Hillcats finally got to Mustangs' starter Katlyn Holmes in the top of the fourth as Makenzie Kirk drew a walk to start the frame. Carley Conley stepped to the plate with two outs and drove a line drive over the left field fence cutting the deficit to 5-2.
RSU carried the momentum onto the field with two spectacular defensive plays starting with a leaping catch from right fielder Katie Ellington. With a runner on first, Kelby Fritz snared a glove-tearing line drive and threw back to first to complete the double play ending the inning.
Harbert faced the minimum 10 batters over the final innings but the offense could not come up with any more runs as the Hillcats dropped the finale 5-2.
Rogers State (1-4) next travels to San Antonio, Texas for the St. Mary's Classic Feb. 21 and 22 beginning with a matchup against Eastern New Mexico at 10 a.m.
