Bats Come Alive in Softball Cats' Sweep of St. Edward's

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State softball team saw its bats come alive in a doubleheader sweep of St. Edward's in Heartland Conference action Friday at the Diamond Sports Complex getting 13-7 and 4-0 wins, extending its win streak to four.

The Hillcats broke through in the opener recording a season high in both runs and hits with 13 and 15, respectively, while posting eight hits in the nightcap behind Yolanda Rios' shutout.

Carley Conley led the offense going 5-for-7 in the doubleheader with five RBIS, all in the opener, while Candace Monigold and Taran Threet each crossed home plate four times.

GAME ONE

RSU scored in every inning except the second and nine different players recorded at least one hit as Conley and Taran each went 3-for-4 leading the charge in a 13-7 victory to open the day.

The Hillcats took a quick 2-0 lead in the first as Jamie Kowalick hit a lead-off single followed by a line-drive, two-run home run by Monigold as she scalded her team-leading sixth home run of the year, just over the 200-foot fence in center field.

After the Hilltoppers scored three in the second and two in the third for a 5-2 advantage, RSU responded with a four-run third reclaiming the lead, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Conley, and the Hillcats never looked back tallying eight-unanswered runs.

A three-run fourth stretched the margin to 9-5 and a sacrifice fly by Kowalick in the fifth gave the Hillcats their highest run total of the season at 10 before tacking on three more in the sixth closing the game 13-7.

Freshman Brooklyne Harbert picked up the victory in relief of Rios throwing five innings allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. SEU had its chances leaving 11 runners on base.

GAME TWO

Rios went the distance earning a complete-game shutout in the nightcap but had to fight for every inch as the Hilltoppers put a runner on base in every inning. The senior stranded 10 in the ball game scattering seven hits while striking out 10 getting her fifth win of the season.

Jackie Flores gave Rios and the Hillcats all the run support they would need with a two-run double in the second scoring Kelby Fritz and Rios.

SEU left a pair of runners in the fourth and fifth and RSU carried the momentum to the offensive side adding a run in the bottom of the fifth when Katie Ellington singled early in the frame, her second hit of the game. The senior stole second and came around to score on an error with a perfect slide under the tag for a 3-0 lead.

Threet provided another insurance run with a no-doubt round tripper in the sixth for a 4-0 advantage on her second home run of the season.

Rios struck out the final batter of the game reaching double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this year.

Rogers State (8-20, 3-8 HC) closes the three-game series with St. Edward's Saturday at 2 p.m. The Hillcats will partner with the Folds of Honor foundation and hold Military Appreciation Day at the Diamond Sports Complex. The game will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
