ODESSA, Texas – The Rogers State baseball team dropped the rubber game of a Heartland Conference series at Texas-Permian Basin Saturday falling 3-0 at Roden Field.
The Falcons limited the Hillcats to four hits over nine innings taking the three-game series two games to one behind Lance Fairchild's complete-game shutout.
UTPB broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Michael Resnick drove home a pair with a bases-loaded single for a 2-0 lead as the Falcons took advantage of a walk and hit batter in the frame.
Resnick added another RBI single to center in the sixth extending the margin to 3-0. That gave Fairchild all the run support he needed as he allowed just five base runners with the Diamond Cats drawing one walk. The right-handed hurler went the distance on only 88 pitches.
RSU senior Jesse Baird was tagged with the loss throwing six innings of six-hit ball giving up all three runs while matching a season high with seven strike outs. Travis Teague pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit for the Hillcats.
Chase Knott recorded the only extra-base hit for the Diamond Cats with a lead-off double in the fourth.
Rogers State (17-24, 10-17 HC) remains on the road for its final Heartland Conference series in its inaugural season in the league with a three-game series starting Friday, April 25 in Austin, Texas at St. Edward's.
