AUSTIN, Texas – The Rogers State baseball team scored first but could not hold the lead on the road falling 9-1 in its Heartland Conference finale at No. 7 St. Edward's Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
The Hillcats were limited to just three hits in their final road game of the season as the Hilltoppers secured the regular season conference title scoring in each of the final five innings.
Logan Palmer was hit-by-pitch to open the second inning and moved to second on
J.P. Seifried's single. Palmer advanced to third and came around to score on an errant SEU throw off
James Marks' sacrifice bunt giving RSU a quick 1-0 lead.
The advantage was short lived as the Hilltoppers evened the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth behind Chris Killeen's RBI double. SEU then pounced on two Hillcat errors tallying a four-run fifth, with all runs coming after two outs were recorded. Dylan Watts provided a two-run single with the bases loaded.
An AJ Hermanson home run in the sixth extended the margin to 7-1 and the Hilltoppers added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to close out the three-game sweep of RSU, 9-1.
Senior
Jesse Baird suffered the loss for the Hillcats allowing five runs, four earned, on only four hits in five innings of work.
Rogers State (17-27, 10-20 HC) closes the 2014 season Tuesday facing Oklahoma Baptist, the top-ranked team in the NAIA, at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Okla. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and tickets are still available through the RSU athletic department.
