ODESSA, Texas – The Rogers State men's soccer team tied the score late in the second half and played out two overtimes to a 2-2 draw at UT Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon at the UTPB Turf Field.
Playing a man down, the Hillcats knotted the score at 2-2 on freshman
Chris Sowder's header in the 78th minute off a corner kick deflection.
Abe Young picked up the assist on the game-tying goal.
After two overtime periods of 10 minutes, neither of the teams could tally a goal, ending the game with a 2-2 score. Goalkeeper
Cody Gammill made two saves in the overtime periods, and the Hillcats had two late opportunities in overtime as Young and
Niall Smith each put a shot on goal in the final two minutes.
The Falcons went up 2-1 after a penalty kick goal in the 64th minute. UTPB received the penalty kick after a red card on
Riggie Gonzalez.
The scoring started quickly in the early going as the Falcons tallied the opening goal in the second minute by Alejandro Mendoza for a 1-0 score.
RSU answered right back in the 14th minute when striker
Jake Simpson scored his third goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1. A Falcon turnover set up the goal with
Jordan Watson getting the assist on the Simpson goal.
In a physical contest, the two teams combined for 11 yellow cards and the one red card. For the game, there were 37 fouls between the two teams.
Gammill played the full 110 minutes in goal, totaling eight saves and allowing the two goals.
