CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State men's soccer team fell behind 2-0 in the first half and couldn't recover in a 2-1 loss to No. 23-ranked Midwestern State on Thursday (Sept. 22) at Soldier Field.
MSU went up 1-0 in the 10th minute of the contest on a header from eight yards on a long free kick. Jorge DeLeon scored the Mustang goal.
Kevin Kwarteng looked to even the score at 1-1 in the 39th minute, but a late offside call negated the equalizing goal.
The Mustangs added their second goal of the first half in the 40th minute on a shot to the near post from six yards by Leon Taylor.
RSU scored its goal early in the second half on an own goal in the 49th minute.
Jordan Watson sent in a perfect corner kick that found the head of a Mustang defender and into the goal for the 2-1 score.
The Hillcats had two other close opportunities as
Niall Smith was unlucky and hit both the post and crossbar. In the 25th minute, a Smith header found the post. The last opportunity for the Cats to tie the score came in the 77th minute on a free kick from 20 yards, but Smith hit the crossbar on a shot toward the right upper corner.
For the contest, the No. 23-ranked Mustangs totaled 20 shots with five tallies on goal. The Hillcats registered seven shots with two on goal. Kwarteng and Smith each had two shots.
Cody Gammill went the full 90 minutes in goal, making three saves and allowing the two goals.
