CLAREMORE, Okla. –
Jake Simpson's golden goal in overtime stunned No. 3-ranked St. Edward's as the Rogers State men's soccer team won, 2-1, on Thursday at Soldier Field, handing the Hilltoppers their first conference loss since 2013.
Simpson knocked in the game-winning golden goal in the 95th minute to down the No. 3-ranked Hilltoppers, 2-1. Nail Smith sent in a free kick that bounced around in the box until Simpson fired it into the goal, his team-leading fourth of the season. Before tonight's game, SEU had only allowed two goals all season, but conceded two to the Hillcats tonight.
After falling behind late in the first half, RSU evened the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute as
Kevin Kwarteng scored from eight yards out on the left wing after Smith went by the SEU defense and sent the ball to Kwarteng for the tally.
The No. 3-ranked Hilltoppers went in front, 1-0, in the 42nd minute on a goal from Pablo Covarrubias as his shot from 20 yards went to the upper left corner for the first goal of the game.
The win ended a 21-game conference winning streak for SEU, dating back to Oct. 28, 2013 when the Hilltoppers lost 1-0 to Lubbock Christian. The RSU win also ends an eight-game winning streak to start the season for SEU as the Hilltoppers entered tonight's game 8-0.
With the No. 3 ranking, the Hillcats defeated its highest ranked opponent in program history.
In a tough and physical game between two top league contenders, the teams combined for more than 40 fouls and nine yellow cards.
SEU held a slight advantage in shots at 14-12; however, the Hillcats edged the Hilltoppers in shots on goal at 7-3. Kwarteng put three shots on goal with Smith adding two on target.
Cody Gammill picked up the win in goal, allowing the one goal in 95 minutes and making two saves. He moved to 5-2-2 on the season.
