Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hillcats Play to Draw with No. 3 Midwestern State

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State men's soccer team scored early on No. 3-ranked Midwestern State, but the Mustangs tallied a second-half goal to play to a 1-1 draw on Thursday at Soldier Field.

The Hillcats (6-5-2, 3-4-2 Heartland Conference) gave the Mustangs (11-0-2, 7-0-2) their first deficit of the season in the 15th minute when senior Riggie Gonzalez scored on a header at the back post on a ball sent in from Kevin Kwarteng for a 1-0 RSU advantage.

MSU evened the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute of the second half with its own header goal. Scott Doney flicked in the goal off a free kick from 25 yards from Carlos Flores.

Both teams had big opportunities to score the game winner late in the contest. A header from Doney off a corner kick hit the crossbar with only seconds remaining in regulation to keep the score even. RSU's Jaxon Pitt had a few chances in overtime. The freshman hit a header wide and moments later looked to have a wide open opportunity on goal, but he pulled his shot to the right. The Cats forced MSU to make two huge saves in the second overtime with chances from Pitt and Michael Turner.

The Mustangs held a slight 23-15 edge in shots, including a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. Gonzalez and Pitts each posted a team-high three shots. Doney of MSU totaled a game-high six shots.

In a physical game, the two teams combined for 10 yellow cards and one red card. Fouls totaled 47 for the two teams in the 110 minutes of action.

Walker Farrar collected eight saves in the 110 minutes in goal while allowing the one tally. The senior from Topeka, Kan. moved to 2-2-1 on the season.

It marks the second straight season the Hillcats earned points against a No. 3-ranked team at Soldier Field. RSU defeated No. 3-ranked St. Edward's, 2-1, last season on Sept. 29, 2016 on a Jake Simpson overtime golden goal.

The Hillcats make a short trip to Newman on Saturday for a 12 p.m. contest against the Jets at Wilkins Field in Wichita, Kan. Live stats and video will be available for the game.
