Hillcats Hit 12 3s to Cruise to 77-57 Win over TAMIU

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's basketball team won its second straight game with a dominating 77-57 victory over Texas A&M International on Saturday (Jan. 20) at the Claremore Expo Center. RSU hit 12 3-pointers and shot 54.5 percent from deep, both top three performances in RSU history.
 
The navy and red (6-11, 2-4 Heartland Conference) sank 12-of-22 3-pointers for 54.5 percent, including going 7-of-10 shooting in the second half. Desiree Nelson hit five of them (5-6) and Kamry Chamberlain added three triples. Darian Jackson, Nikola Nedoroscikova and Lindsey Byfield each hit from deep as well.    
 
The Hillcats used a 10-0 run after TAMU's Passionate Amukamara scored the game's first basketball as RSU took a 10-2 lead at the 2:43 mark of the first period on a Jordan Evans layup. Nelson and Jackson sank 3-pointers during the spurt, and Jackson added an inside basket.
 
After holding a 15-8 edge after the first period, the navy and red pulled away in the second period with two runs to take a 35-16 advantage into halftime. With the score at 23-12 with 6:46 left before the half, RSU went on a 12-2 run in the next six minutes to gain a 35-14 margin. Nedoroscikova started the outburst with back-to-back driving layups, and Nelson hit another 3 to put the Cats up at 30-12 at the 3:16 mark. Chamberlain knocked down a triple, and Evans scored on a jumper on the baseline for the 35-14 score. TAMIU registered a late basket for the 35-16 margin at halftime.
 
The Cats extended the advantage to the largest of the game at 25 points in the third period with 4:46 left on a layup from Jackson for a 47-22 score. RSU led by at least double digits throughout the second half en route to the 77-57 victory.
 
A total of 11 Hillcats tallied points. Jackson scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Nelson went 5-for-6 shooting from 3 for 15 points, and Chamberlain tallied 11 points.
 
Amukamara scored a team-high 14 points for TAMIU. RSU held leading scorer Tantashea Giger to only four points with her first point coming with 5:37 remaining in the third period.
 
The Hillcats continue its stretch of four home games with UA Fort Smith on Wednesday (Jan. 24) at 5:30 p.m. inside the Claremore Expo Center. Coverage will be available on the Hillcat Network, RSU TV and 91.3 FM.
