Hillcats Use Dominating First Half to Roll to Win over TWU

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Rogers State women's basketball team pulled out to a 30-point halftime advantage and never looked back in a 81-62 victory over Texas Woman's on Saturday (Nov. 10) for the Hillcats' first win this season and the first win at RSU for women's basketball head coach Kyle Bent.
 
The first two quarters were completely dominated by the navy and red as the Cats held a 49-19 lead after 20 minutes of action. The Cats shot 61.5 percent in the first half, including 72.7 percent in the second quarter.
 
With the score tied at 2-2 in the opening minute, RSU ended the first quarter on a 19-2 run to go up 21-4 after 10 minutes. Consecutive 3-pointers from Desiree Nelson and Azaria Floyd made it 8-2 early. The final 16 points of the quarter were scored by Floyd and fellow newcomer Alicia Brown to push the margin out to 17 points.
 
In the second quarter, the Hillcats were sizzling shooting the ball at 72.7 percent to extend the score to 49-19. Holding a 16-point edge at 29-13 in the second quarter, RSU used a quick 9-0 run to increase the margin to 38-13 after baskets by Lauren Schuldt, Nelson (3-pointer), Floyd and Darian Jackson. In the final 1:31 before half, the Cats tallied seven straight points for the 30-point halftime advantage.
 
TWU cut the deficit down to 13 late in the second half, but the navy and red stayed in control en route to the 81-62 victory.
 
Four Hillcats finished in double figures in scoring. Floyd and Schuldt totaled a team-high 17 points. Brown added 14 points, and Nelson went for 13 points. Schuldt just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. She also blocked three shots.
 
RSU shot 46.3 percent (25-54) from the field and 34.6 (9-26) from 3. TWU finished at 36.1 percent (22-61) and 22.2 percent (4-18) from 3-point range.
 
TWU's Bri'Anna Gray totaled a game-high 25 points.
 
RSU finished 1-1 during the opening weekend at the TexAnn Tip-Off Classic at Tarleton State.  
 
The Hillcats return home for three straight home contests. RSU's home opener is Wednesday (Nov. 14) against in-state rival Northeastern State at 5:30 p.m. at the Claremore Expo Center. Live stats, video streaming and radio coverage on 91.3 FM will be available.
