Hillcats Come Up Short at No. 1 Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Rogers State men's soccer team evened the score at 1-1 in the first half against No. 1-ranked Midwestern State, but the Mustangs tallied two second-half goals to win 3-1 over the Hillcats on Thursday (Sept. 13) night in the league opener for Heartland Conference action.
 
The Hillcats (2-3, 0-1 Heartland Conference) tied the score in the 40th minute on a breakaway from Abe Young. He fired a shot from 10 yards and beat the MSU goalkeeper to the right side of the game for a 1-1 score and his first goal of the season.
 
The Mustangs (4-0, 1-0 Heartland) responded in the second half with two goals for the 3-1 victory. The game-winning goal came in the 59th minute when Juan Ramirez of MSU knocked in a cross for a 2-1 advantage. MSU added an insurance goal in the 84th minute for the 3-1 final tally.
 
In the first half, the host Mustangs went in front 1-0 in the 12th minute before the Cats equalized in the 40th minute.
 
For the 90 minutes, No. 1-ranked MSU held a 21-8 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. Jordan Watson and Jake Simpson each registered two shots for the navy and red.
 
Freshman Chase Coy made his first collegiate start in goal, going the full 90 minutes. He made three saves, but allowed the three goals to drop to 0-1 in his short career.
 
The Hillcats go on the road on Saturday (Sept. 15) at Oklahoma Christian for a 2:30 p.m. contest in Oklahoma City. Live stats and video will be available.
