Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early Goal Dooms Hillcats in 2-0 Loss to SEU

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Visiting St. Edward's scored in the first minute of the game, and the Rogers State women's soccer team couldn't recover in a 2-0 loss to St. Edward's on Thursday (Sept. 27) at Soldier Field.

The Hilltoppers (5-2-1, 5-0-0 Heartland Conference) went in front 1-0 only 42 seconds into the game when India Wentz tapped in a cross for the early game-winning goal.

The goal ended a 407 minute shutout streak for the navy and red and goalkeeper Taylor Sargent, the three-time Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

In the second half, St. Edward's added an insurance goal when a foul in the box gave the Hilltoppers a penalty kick. Sabrina Cone converted for the 2-0 edge in the 57th minute of the contest.

Although the Hillcats (6-2-1, 3-1-1) fell 2-0, RSU held a commanding 17-4 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 lead in shots on goal. The navy and red outshot SEU 10-2 in the first half, but couldn't find the equalizing goal.

Midway through the first half, RSU had one of its best opportunities in the game, but Hannah Mushisky's shot knocked off the crossbar to deny the Hillcats a goal. In the first half alone, the Cats totaled four shots on goal.

Senior forward BreAnn Tolleson led the team in shots with five, including two on goal.

For the game, Sargent posted one save in 90 minutes with the two goals allowed. She dropped to 6-2-1 on the season in goal.

The loss snapped a 12-game unbeaten streak in league play for RSU dating back to the 2017 season.

The Hillcats look to get back on track on Saturday (Sept. 29) against Dallas Baptist University. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Soldier Field. Coverage will be available on the Hillcat Network.
