Hillcats Use Three Pointer in Second Half Rally to Defeat Newman 75-65

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Saint Hilaire and Tavian Davis combined for seven three pointers in the first eight minutes of the second half to fuel a big rally for the Hillcats, as Rogers State defeated Newman University 75-65 in Heartland Conference play Thursday night at the Claremore Expo Center.
 
Hilaire, who came off the school's first triple-double in school history on Monday, hit four three pointers, while Davis added three more for the Hillcats (13-3, 2-0 Heartland). Prior to the game, Hilaire had just three triples on the season and his four set a new career high.
 
Davis matched his career high of three with his second-half performance from behind the arc.
 
Rogers State was 1-for-13 from behind the arc in the first half, as Newman (10-5, 1-2) took a 38-30 lead into the break.
 
The Hillcats came out of the break and connected on seven of their first eight three-point attempts to spark a 27-12 run and take a seven-point lead.
 
After Newman responded and regained the lead at 65-63 with 4:19 remaining, the Hillcats defense held the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the contest and scored 12 points for the 10-point victory.
 
Hilaire, who had 20 second-half points, led all scorers with 23 points for the game, setting a new season high. The senior guard also pulled down 11 rebounds, tied for a game high, to earn a double-double.
 
Davis and Tate Turner each finished with 13 points in the contest. Davis added four assists and two rebounds, while Turner had three rebounds and three assists.
 
Rogers State shot 42 percent for the game and 31 percent from behind the arc, despite 54 percent shooting in the second half. Newman shot 37 percent from the field but were 45 percent from behind the arc.
 
The Hillcats converted 12 turnovers from the Jets into 21 points, while holding Newman to just nine points off of 10 turnovers.
 
Brewster Peacock set a career high with five assists in the contest. The sophomore also had five rebounds to go with six points.
 
Josh Joiner led the Hillcats off the bench with eight points and three rebounds in 12 minutes. Latrell Tidwell came off the bench to score six points with four boards and a steal.
 
Rogers State will now hit the road for the first time in 2019, as the Hillcats travel to Dallas Baptist (9-6, 2-1) Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip in the Lonestar state.
