Hillcats Defeat Northeastern State 2-0 In GAC Play

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State Men's Soccer picked up a 2-0 victory in Great American Conference play, defeating Northeastern State 2-0 Friday night at DeLoache Field.

Callum Hubble scored his first goal of the season and Jake Simpson added his seventh goal of the year, both on corner kicks, to propel the Hillcats to their first victory over Northeastern State in a non-exhibition contest.

Hubble netted the second of his career in the 67th minute to break the tie and give the Hillcats the lead. Noah Robson kicked the corner to Michael Turner, who headed the ball back across goal for Hubble to finish and give the visitors the lead.

Just over seven minutes later, the Hillcats would capitalize on another set piece. Jordan Watson started the corner, playing the ball to Cairo Allen, who then went on to Turner. For the second time in the game, Turner picked up the primary assist, this time setting up Simpson, who scored in his third consecutive game.

At the other end of the pitch, Austin Wormell returned to goal and picked up nine saves for his second clean sheet of the season and the second-straight clean sheet after Dillon Dean's shutout last Saturday.

Both teams would have two shots on target in the first half with ESU edging the hosts 4-3 in overall shots and 3-2 in corners through the first 45 minutes.

The Hillcats would start the second half strong with several early shots, including Simpson's blocked shot that led to the first goal's corner kick.

Robson would have a shot saved that led to the second goal's corner kick. Overall, the Hillcats had five corner kicks to just one from Northeastern State in the second half.

Following the second goal, Northeastern State would force Wormell into four saves in order to keep the shutout.

The Hillcats will return home to Claremore for a Great American Conference contest against Harding University on Thursday. The Hillcats and Bison will kickoff at 6 p.m. at Soldier Field.
