Women's Basketball Falls In Overtime At Northern State In Season Opener

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Rogers State Women's Basketball team fell in overtime to host Northern State in the season opener and the first game of the Central Region Challenge at Wachs Arena Friday afternoon.
 
Trailing late, senior Darian Jackson hit a free throw with five seconds to go, helping to send the Hillcats to overtime. However, the Hillcats would be outscored 11-4 in the extra frame, to fall in the opener.
 
Jackson led all scorers in the game, finishing with 17 points. She also had three rebounds and a pair of steals in 25 minutes. Jackson was 7-for-10 from the field in the game.
 
The teams traded the lead early and often in the game, with neither team extending the advantage further than six points until the final frame when the hosts took an eight-point lead with the first basket of the fourth quarter.
 
However, Rogers State outscored Northern State 14-6 over the final 5:19 to force overtime. Jackson had five points on the run while Katrina Christian had four points. Vanessa Gajdosova had a three pointer and Alicia Brown also had a jumper to close the gap.
 
Christian had seven points and a team high four steals in her Hillcat debut. Gajdosova led the Hillcats with five rebounds and five assists, to go along with nine points in her debut as well.
 
Freshman Bailey Kliewer joined Gajdosova with five rebounds in the contest. She had seven points and three steals in her collegiate debut.
 
Samariah Thompson joined Jackson as the only other Hillcat in double figures, scoring 11 points in 18 minutes. Thompson also had three rebounds and a pair of steals in her first game with the Hillcats.
 
Alicia and Alyche Brown became the first sisters to ever play in the same game and at the same time for Rogers State Women's Basketball. Alicia finished with seven points, four rebounds and two steals to open her senior season.
 
Alyche began her collegiate career with two points and two rebounds. The freshman also had two steals, two assists and the Hillcats only block of the game.
 
All eight Hillcats to play in the game scored, with sophomore transfer Julie Luna accounting for the other four points for Rogers State. Luna also had a pair of rebounds in her Hillcat debut.

Rogers State shot just 38.6 percent from the floor, while Northern State finished at 52.6 percent shooting for the game. The Hillcats were outrebounded 46-28 in the game. However, Rogers State forced 28 turnovers in the game while turning the ball over just 15 times. 
 
Rogers State will look to bounce back on Saturday, taking on No. 18 Minnesota State-Moorhead. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. in Aberdeen at Wachs Arena.
