Men's Basketball Falls At Home to Northeastern State In MIAA Play

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State men's basketball fell to the visiting Northeastern State RiverHawks by a score of 89-73 on Saturday at the Claremore Expo Center.
 
How it Happened: The RiverHawks (15-8, 8-6 MIAA) would get off to a fast start over the Hillcats (18-5, 10-4 MIAA), hitting three of their first four three pointers from downtown to start the game.
 
The Hillcats would tie the game at the 10:20 mark of the first half. However, the RiverHawks would not relinquish their lead after that.
 
Northeastern State's biggest lead in the half was 20, and they would head to the locker room with a 51-34 lead over the Hillcats.
 
The RiverHawks' success from the three-point line would continue in the second half, as they would hit seven from downtown.
 
The Hillcats' biggest deficit in the game came at the 7:48 mark in the second half by 28 points.
 
Key Statistics: The RiverHawks shot 53.3 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from the three-point line, while the Hillcats shot only 32.8 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the three-point line.
 
The RiverHawks never trailed the Hillcats and would lead the game for 37:08 minutes.
 
Senior Kendrick Thompson would be a key aspect for the RiverHawks, as he would go on to score 31 points, shooting 56 percent from the three-point line, including nine three pointers.
 
Players of Note: Senior Christopher Miller led the Hillcats with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Miller would be nearly perfect from the free-throw line, hitting 10 of his 11 shots.
 
Junior Brewster Peacock would finish the game with 16 points. Peacock shot 3-for-5 from the three-point line, and he was perfect from the free-throw line, making all seven of his attempts. He would also record three rebounds and three assists in the game.
 
Freshman Jett Sternberger finished the game with 11 points. Sternberger would shoot 3-for-6 from the three-point line. He was perfect from the free-throw line making both of his attempts.
 
Senior Marques Sumner finished the game with 10 points. Sumner was perfect from the free-throw line, hitting both of his attempts. He also recorded two assists and three rebounds.
 
Sophomore Michiah McQuarters finished the game with 10 points. He would also record three rebounds in the game.
 
Notes: Tavion Davis set a new career school record with 286 assists, via his first assist of the game. He finished with seven assists overall.
 
The Hillcats shot 28-for-30 (.933) from the free-throw line, the fourth best free-throw percentage in school history.
 
This is Rogers State's first loss to Northeastern State in program history, making the all-time record between the two programs 7-1.
 
This loss snapped the Hillcats seven game winning streak.
 
Up Next: The Hillcats will play the second game of their final home stand of the season on Thursday, hosting Emporia State for the first time as MIAA opponents. The teams will tip off at 7:30 p.m. at the Claremore Expo Center on February 13.
