CLAREMORE, Okla. – After starting down 13-2 to start the game, Rogers State women's basketball (4-5, 0-3 MIAA) could not close the gap as they fell 74-60 in the MIAA home opener to Pittsburg State (6-2, 2-1 MIAA).
Three Hillcats posted double digits on the night. Julie Luna paced the squad with 15 points and a steal. Kylee Day posted 11 points with three rebounds and two steals. Bailey Kliewer contributed 10 points with four rebounds, three steals and a block. Both Vanessa Gajdosova and Katrina Christian added a team-high five rebounds apiece.
The first quarter was tough for RSU as they went down 13-2. They didn't score their first and only points of the period until three minutes into the game.
The Hillcats bounced back in the final 10 minutes of the half though as they trimmed the lead to eight points at 23-15 a little over half way through the period. However, they were still outscored 19-15 in the quarter and trailed 32-17 going into the locker room.
After the break, RSU started to find their stride in the third quarter as they outscored the Gorillas 22-17 in the period. They managed to bring the lead back down to seven points at 41-34, but still trailed 49-39 going into the fourth quarter.
The Hillcats fought hard in the final 10 minutes, but PSU regained control of the game outscoring RSU 25-21 in the period. They took the largest lead of the game at 68-47 with 3:36 left, but the Hillcats closed it out on a 13-7 run to cut the final margin to 74-60.
RSU will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 11 in the Claremore Expo Center as they close out the two-game homestand with a visit from Missouri Southern. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
