Wichita, Kan. – Rogers State women's basketball fell on the road at Newman 60-47 on Saturday at the Fugate Gymnasium in MIAA play.
Senior
Lilly Garner led all scorers with 19 points, but the Hillcats (5-16, 5-16 MIAA) fell on the road to the Jets (6-14, 6-14 MIAA) and are on the brink of elimination from postseason contention.
How It Happened: The Jets jumped out to an early double-digit lead to start the game, after they went on a 15-1 run to begin the game. The Hillcats would only add four more points in the quarter, finishing with a season-low five points in a quarter as they trailed 17-5 at the break.
In the second quarter, the Hillcats would cut into the deficit. A 7-2 Hillcat run, capped off with a three-pointer jumper at the 1:58 mark by Garner cut the Jets lead to a quarter low of six-points. The Jets would extend their lead to eight points and led the Hillcats by a score of 27-19 at the half.
Garner would lead the Hillcats in scoring in the first half with eight points, followed by junior
Vanessa Gajdosova, who had six points and five rebounds.
The Hillcats rallied in the second half and went on a 14-4 run in the third sparked by an early jumper from freshman
Kloe Bowin. The Hillcats then took their first lead of the game after a jumper from Garner with 40 seconds left in the quarter. However, the Jets would answer back and tie the game at 33 headed into the final quarter.
The Hillcats rally would go cold as the Jets pulled away from Rogers State with a 19-4 run to begin the fourth. Newman would expand the lead to as much as 15 in the second half as the Jets snapped a 10-game losing skid.
Key Statistic: Rogers State committed 18 total fouls and sent the Jets to the line free-throw line 23 times where they hit on 18 of their chances (78.3 percent). Newman only committed nine fouls and the Hillcats were 4-for-8 from the free-throw line (50 percent).
Players of Note: Garner tied a career high with 19 points, matching her performance against Fort Hays State last season and earlier this season at Oral Roberts. She also set a career high with four assists and added four rebounds. Garners five three pointers is just one off a career best for the senior.
Vanessa Gajdosova finished the game just shy of her second career double-double, finishing with nine points. The junior shot 4-for-6 from the field. She set a career high with 11 rebounds, besting a 10-rebound performance earlier this season against Fort Hays State. Gajdosova also had four steals and three assists.
Bowin finished the game with seven points. She also recorded a pair of rebounds.
Samariah Thompson finished with six points and added three rebounds, a pair of assists, and a steal.
Notes for the game: Newman outrebounded Rogers State 45-to-32 in total rebounds in the game. The Jets outrebounded the Hillcats 15-to-9 in offensive rebounds and 30-to-23 in defensive rebounds for the game.
Newman converted their offensive rebounds, outscoring Rogers State in second-chance points by a 15-to-5 margin.
Rogers State was outscored by Newman 21-to-4 in points off of the bench.
For the first time this season, the Hillcats were held without a block.
