TOPEKA, Kan. – Senior
Brewster Peacock scored his 1,000
th career point but the Hillcats fell to No. 17 Washburn 88-77 Thursday night in MIAA play at Lee Arena.
Peacock needed 11 points in the game to reach the milestone. Early in the second half, Peacock was sitting on 999-career points and hit a three pointer at 17:13 to surpass 1,000 career points with his 13
th point of the game.
However, the Hillcats (6-9, 6-9 MIAA) could not hold off a hot-shooting Washburn (12-3, 12-3 MIAA) team that shot 61 percent in the second half and 54 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened: Peacock started the scoring in the game with a layup 53 seconds in and the Hillcats led until Washburn went in front with 12:29 remaining in the half on a pair of free throws to make it 9-8.
The Hillcats immediately responded with a 9-0 run to go up 17-9, but Washburn would use a pair of 8-0 runs to take the lead late in the half, going up by as much as six points at 35-29.
Rogers State would close the half with the final three points, heading into the half down 35-32.
After three points from
Joey Saracco to start the second half, Peacock ignited the Hillcats 12-0 run that began at the end of the first half. Peacock hit back-to-back three pointers to reach 999 career points and give Rogers State a 41-35 lead.
Following a free throw from Washburn, Peacock hit the milestone three pointer, giving Rogers State it's largest lead of the game at 44-36.
The lead would be short-lived, as Washburn answered with it's own 12-0 run to go back in front 48-44.
The teams traded the lead multiple time before
Destin Eke gave Rogers State it's final lead of the game with a three-point play on a layup and free throw with 11:49 remaining.
The Ichabods responded with a 10-0 run, including a pair of three pointers, in 95 seconds to take control, going up by eight at 62-54.
The Hillcats could never get closer than a two-possession game the rest of the way. Rogers State closed the gap to four points with 2:43 remaining, but Washburn responded with the next 10 points to seal the victory.
Key Statistic: Washburn shot 48.3 percent from three-point range with 14 three pointers in the game. The Hillcats were just 6-for-26 from behind the arc, shooting 23.1 percent from three-point range.
Players of Note: Peacock finished with 14 points on the night, shooting 5-for-8 from the field with a trio of three pointers. Peacock also had three rebounds.
Darraja Parnell led the Hillcats in scoring for the second-straight game. After a career high 21 last Saturday, Parnell dropped 15 against the Ichabods. Parnell also had three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Destin Eke was the only other Hillcat in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Eke also had a team-high eight rebounds.
Notes from the Game: Peacock becomes just the sixth Hillcat to score 1,000-career points in the navy and red. Peacock also surpassed Donald Williams (1,000) on the RSU career scoring list. Peacock is fifth all-time with 1,003 points.
Rogers State suffered it's fourth straight defeat, matching the longest losing streak in program history.
The Hillcats lost their first Thursday night road game of the season and fell to 0-4 against ranked opponents this season.
Rogers State edged Washburn in rebounds 33-32. The Hillcats also had the edge in offensive rebounds 7-5, but were outscored 8-7 by Washburn in second-chance points.
The Hillcats lost the turnover battle 16-13. Washburn capitalized with 27 points off Hillcat turnovers, while Rogers State had just 14 points off turnovers from the Ichabods.
Up Next: Rogers State wraps up the week with a road trip to Emporia, Kansas to take on Emporia State on Saturday. The Hillcats will take on Emporia for the second time this season after beating the Hornets in January. Tip off is set for 1:30 p.m. at White Auditorium.
