Hillcats Knockoff RiverHawks In Thrilling 2-1 Win

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State men's soccer (6-3-5, 4-1-3 GAC/MIAA) took a 2-1 win and knocked off Northeastern State (7-4-2, 4-3-1 GAC/MIAA) on Saturday night.

Luke Morgan scored his first two goals of the season in the victory. Declan Viljoen was excellent in goal as he made five saves on 12 shots faced and only allowed the lone goal.

In the opening 45 minutes, the Riverhawks controlled the game on both offense and defense. NSU outshot the Hillcats 8-2 in the period with five shots on goal compared to none. The RiverHawks broke the scoreless tie in the 23rd minute as Martin Martinez fired in a shot off a rebound with an assist from Flynn Semmerling to give NSU an early 1-0 lead.

The second half was a different story as the Hillcats came out of the locker room with an offensive and defensive intensity. Just 30 seconds into the period Luke Morgan scored the equalizer on an excellent set of passes from George Robinson and D'Waylan McIntosh to knot things at 1-1. Later in the 58th minute, RSU earned a penalty kick and Morgan put the Hillcats on top 2-1 with a brilliant shot to the right corner of the goal. The RSU defense held strong as they out shot NSU 6-4 in the second half with four shots on goal compared to just one.

The Hillcats will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 20 as they welcome Ouachita Baptist to Soldier Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
