EDMOND, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (7-10, 2-4 MIAA) dropped the series to Central Oklahoma (9-6, 4-2 MIAA) in a series finale doubleheader on Saturday.
GAME ONE - UCO 19, RSU 12
In the first game of the day, the Bronchos wasted no time as they took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The run scored on a wild pitch. They tacked on four more runs in the second to go up 5-0. The first two runs came on a two RBI single to right. A two RBI double down the left field line brought in the final two runs.
The Hillcats responded with a five-run inning of their own in the top of the third to tie things up. Gavin Mestas scored the first run on a bases loaded walk to Skyler Nelson. Joel Escalante cleared the bases with a grand slam over the right center field wall, bringing in Nelson, Jesse Holguin and Jonathan Soto.
UCO retook went back in front 9-5 with four runs in the bottom half of the third. A solo homer to left center and a three-run blast to right put the Bronchos back in the lead.
RSU cut the lead to 9-7 with two runs in the top of the fourth. Soto plated Mestas and Victor Ceniceros with a two RBI single to right.
The Hillcats took their first lead of the game at 10-9 with three more runs in the top of the fifth. Ceniceros, Connor Womack and A.J. Folds all crossed home on a Marco Barrera three RBI double to center.
The Bronchos reclaimed the lead 11-10 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. A RBI bunt single scored the first run, with the other run coming on a wild pitch.
Once again, RSU tied the game at 11-11 in the top of the sixth. Holguin brought in Soto with a RBI single to right. In the bottom half of the frame, UCO pushed back out to a 12-11 lead thanks to a solo home run.
The Bronchos exploded for seven runs in the seventh to take a 19-11 run. The first two runs came on a two RBI double to right center. A three-run homer and a two RBI double to center brought in the other runs.
The Hillcats added on a final run in the ninth to trim the deficit to 19-12. Escalante went yard for the second time with a solo shot to right.
Lawson Isaacs (2-2) earned the win, with Kylar Patterson (3) earning the save. Rece Parker (1-2) took the loss.
GAME TWO - UCO 17, RSU 11
After both starters worked a scoreless frame to open the second game, RSU got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Joel Escalante continued his hot streak as he launched his third bomb of the day.
The Bronchos went off with six runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead. A two-run home run to center brought in the first to runs. Two RBI singles and a two RBI triple plated the other four runs.
RSU answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4. Victor Ceniceros crossed home on a RBI grounded out from Gavin Mestas. Jonathan Soto drove in Marco Barrera with a RBI single through the left side of the infield. Soto later scored on a RBI groundout from Escalante.
UCO pushed their lead back out to 8-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Both runs came in on a two RBI double.
The Hillcats retook the lead 9-8 as they exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth. Barrera got things started as he drove in Ceniceros and Connor Womack. He later scored on a Soto RBI single to right. Jesse Holguin plated Soto with a RBI double to right, and later scored himself on a wild pitch.
The Bronchos answered back with a four-run bottom half to push out to a 12-9 lead. A sacrifice fly to left brought in the first run. A throwing error by the catcher, a RBI single through the left side of the infield and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded brought in the other runs.
RSU cut the deficit down to 12-11 in the top of the sixth with two runs. Prescott Horn scored on a Barrera RBI double to center. Womack crossed home on a RBI ground out from Gavin Mestas.
UCO put the game away with five runs in the eighth to claim the 17-11 win. A RBI double to left scored the first run. A RBI single through the right side of the infield, a RBI double to center and a two-run blast to left plated the other runs.
Owen Logan (1-0) earned the win, with Beaux Bonvillain (1) earning the save. Boone Lasater (1-1) took the loss.
The Hillcats will be back in action on Tuesday, March 8 as they return home to Diamond Sports Complex for a mid-week game against Southeastern Oklahoma State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
