CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (7-11) came up short 5-4 in the mid-week bout against Northeastern State (16-4) on Wednesday.
The Savage Storm wasted no time time getting on the board as they took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The first run scored on a RBI single to left, with the other two runs coming on a two RBI single to center.
SEOSU added two more runs in the third and fifth innings to push out to a 5-0 lead. The run in the third inning came on a RBI double to right, with the fifth inning run coming on a solo homer to straight away center.
The Hillcats finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as they trimmed the deficit to 5-2. Victor Ceniceros brought in Conner Womack with a RBI groundout to the shortstop. Prescott Horn later crossed home on a bases loaded walk to Jesse Holguin.
They added another run in the eighth to cut the lead to 5-3. Ceniceros once again scored Womack, this time with a RBI single up the middle.
The Hillcats attempted to complete the comeback in the ninth as Skyler Nelson doubled down the left field line driving in Gavin Mestas to pull within 5-4 with two outs. Unfortunately, a pop out to second ended the threat.
Logan Teske (3-0) earned the win, with Jackson Sioson (5) earning the save. Vinny Riggio (0-1) took the loss.
RSU will be back in action on Saturday, March 12 at the Diamond Sports Complex as they return to MIAA play with a three-game series against Fort Hays State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
