PITTSBURG, Kan. – Rogers State baseball (19-18, 12-11 MIAA) fell 23-3 in the series finale to Pittsburg State (23-12, 17-6 MIAA) on Sunday.
The Gorillas wasted no time as the pushed across six runs in the first inning. The runs scored on a RBI double, RBI single, three-run home run and a solo home run.
PSU added two more runs in the second inning to push out to a 8-0 lead. A RBI double down the left field line brought in the first run with a RBI ground out to third plating the other run.
They continued their dominance as they exploded for seven runs in the third inning on three hits to go up 15-0. A solo homer, bases loaded walk, bases loaded hit by pitch and a grand slam scored the runs.
The Hillcats finally got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to a solo shot to left from Joel Escalante to cut the deficit to 15-1.
The Gorillas proceeded to score two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 17-1. A RBI double to left center and a RBI ground out to first plated the runs.
RSU got another run back in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 17-2. Skyler Nelson brought in Gavin Mestas with a RBI single up the middle.
PSU added three runs in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to push out to 23-2. In the fifth, the runs scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch, a RBI fielder's choice and a RBI single up the middle. In the sixth, RBI singles to left and left center as well as a RBI ground out to second brought in the runs.
The Hillcats scratched across one final run in the top of the seventh to make the score 23-3 as Jesse Holguin hit a solo homer to left.
Ben Des Rosiers (5-1) earned the win. Nathan Chase (1-4) took the loss.
RSU returns home on Tuesday, April 12 as they host Missouri Southern for the series finale of their mid-week conference series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
