Hillcats Walk-Off Washburn To Claim Series

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (23-22, 15-15 MIAA) claimed the series in a thrilling 7-6 walk-off victory over Washburn (28-19, 18-12 MIAA) on Saturday.

The Hillcats wasted no time jumping on the board with an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Skyler Nelson got things started as he drove in Marco Barrera with a RBI groundout to the shortstop for the game's first run. Jonathan Soto later scored on a wild pitch.

The Ichabods responded in the top of the fourth with three runs to go up 3-2. The first run scored on a throwing error by the first baseman. The other two runs came in on a two RBI double to right center.

RSU went back up 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Prescott Horn scored on a passed ball. Carson Cheatwood later came in on a bases loaded walk.

The Hillcats tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-3. Horn plated Jesse Holguin with a RBI single up the middle. Nelson crossed home on a wild pitch.

In the top of the ninth, Washburn pushed across three runs to tie the game at 6-6. The first run came in on a RBI double to right with the other two runs scoring on a two RBI single thought the left side of the infield.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ethan Rivera reached on an infield single, with a sacrifice bunt moving him over to second. Soto moved him to third with a single to the shortstop, and later took second on defensive indifference. Facing a 1-1 count, Jesse Holguin deposited a ball into left centerfield to walk the game off by plating Rivera from third.

Octavio Sanchez (3-0) earned the win working the final 4.0 innings with four strikeouts. Dalton Huggins (5-1) took the loss.

The Hillcats are back in action on Tuesday, April 26 as they travel to Alva, Okla. to close out the non-conference slate against Northwestern Oklahoma State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
