TOPEKA, Kan. – Rogers State women's basketball (4-16, 2-12 MIAA) fell 60-53 on the road against Washburn (8-10, 4-8 MIAA) on Thursday.
Trinity Jackson led the way for the HIllcats scoring a season-high 12 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double pulling down nine boards with two assists, two steals and a block. Jordan Lewis added 10 points with seven rebounds.
The first half was a defensive slugfest with both sides struggling to find success on their respective ends of the floor. In the first quarter, the two teams combined to shoot 5-for-26 from the floor and were tied 8-8 going into the final 10 minutes of the half. Things continued to progress slowly, but the Ichabods began to methodically build up a lead in the second quarter. They managed to outscore RSU 15-7 in the period and carried a 23-15 advantage into the break.
The Hillcats fought to get back into the game with five quick points out the locker room to start the third quarter and trim the deficit 23-20. However, Washburn responded with an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the night at 31-20. RSU refused to quit and battled to cut the margin down to 39-31 headed into the fourth quarter.
An 8-4 run to open the final 10 minutes saw the Hillcats cut the lead down to 43-39 with 6:24 left. They continued fighting and were able to get within three points at 52-49 and again at 56-53 with 0:16 left. Unfortunately, two made free throws and a layup with 0:04 left sealed RSU's fate as the Ichabods survived with a 60-53 win.
The Hillcats will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 29Â as they travel to Emporia, Kan. to close out the short roadtrip against Emporia State. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
