Hillcats Fall To Washburn On The Road

TOPEKA, Kan. – Rogers State men's basketball (3-4, 2-2 MIAA) fell 93-71 on the road to Washburn (5-3, 1-1 MIAA) on Saturday.

Three Hillcats finished in double figures. Rodney Battle led RSU with 20 points and one rebound. Anthony Marshall Jr. put up 13 points with a team-high five rebounds along with two steals and an assist. Caden Fry posted 10 points with four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Isaac Johnson contributed nine points with three rebounds and two assists.

RSU looked good to start as they opened the game on a 14-7 run. However, the Ichabods responded quickly as they dashed out on a 10-2 run to claim their first lead at 17-16. The teams traded points over the next few minutes with two lead changes and a tie, but WU came out on top and pulled off another 15-2 run to take their largest lead of the half at 34-22 with 4:52 left in the half. The Hillcats began to find some momentum as they went on a 9-2 run of their own to cut the deficit down to 34-29. Washburn curbed the comeback as they were able to hold serve for the remaining two-plus minutes and took a 41-36 margin into the break.

The second half was all Ichabods as they made 10 shots from distance in the period compared to RSU, who went 0-for-9 from deep in the period. WU took their largest lead of the game at 88-64 with 2:48 left and eventually took the 93-71 decision.

One of the lone bright spots for the Hillcats came at the free throw line as RSU shot a season-high 95.2 percent (20-for-21) from charity in the game. The 20 made free throws is the most in game since they made 23 last season against Lincoln in the regular season finale.

The Hillcats will return home to the Claremore Expo Center on Wednesday, Dec. 13 as they face off against archrival Northeastern State in the final MIAA game of the calendar year. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
