No. 1 RSU Takes Down Savage Storm In First Game of Raising Cane’s Softball Festival

BETHANY, Okla. – No. 1 Rogers State softball (7-0) rolled past Southeastern Oklahoma State (3-7) in a 15-2 win in the first game of the Raising Cane's Softball Festival on Friday.
 
The Hillcats wasted no time getting on the board as they put up three runs in the top of the first. Chelsea Spain led off the game with a double to left. She moved over to third on a bunt single from Nicole Price. Lana Gass then walked to load the bases. Abbey Rogers drove in Spain and Price with a single up the middle. MaKayla Jackson later walked with one out to reload the bases. Marissa Smith earned her own walk to bring in Gass for the third run of the frame.
 
The Savage Storm got a run back in the home half of the inning with a RBI fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 3-1.
 
In the second inning, RSU exploded for seven runs on seven hits to extend the lead out to 10-1. Three-straight doubles to start the inning from Paxton Donaldson, Spain and Price scored the first two runs. Gass was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Rogers again drove in Price with a single up the middle. Jackson later doubled to right center to bring in Gass and Callie Yellin, who pinch ran for Rogers. With one out, Smith belted a two-run homer over the right center field wall to score Ashtyn Barrett, who pinch ran for Jackson.
 
The Hillcats tacked on two more runs in the third as Yellin launched a ball to straight away center to plate Gass and take a 12-1 advantage.
 
Three more runs came in for RSU in the fourth inning as they pushed out to a 15-1 margin. Donaldson singled to left field and moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs. Beth Denney then doubled to right center to bring her in. Price then returned the favor as she plated Denney with a RBI single to left center. Jackie Zaferes scored Price with a single through the left side of the infield.
 
SEOSU got one run back in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead to 15-2 and give the Hillcats the victory. The run scored on a RBI double to center.
 
Jade Sanders (2-0) earned the win working 3.0 innings, only allowing one run on two hits with seven strikeouts. Amberlyn Walsworth (1-3) took the loss.
 
The Hillcats will return to action tomorrow facing off against No. 16 Southern Arkansas and Southwestern Oklahoma State on the second day of the tournament. First pitch against SAU is set for 10:30 a.m. with the game against SWOSU set to begin at 1 p.m.
