Hillcats Draw With Newman In Non-Conference Contest On The Road

WICHITA, Kan. – Rogers State women's soccer (3-1-2) came away with a 1-1 draw with Newman (1-4-1) in a non-conference match on Sunday.

Alix Tirado scored the lone goal for the Hillcats, her third of the season, with an assist from Sarah Ovalle. In 46 minutes played, Ali Day made three saves and allowed one goal with Tiffany Brittan coming in and playing the final 43 minutes.

The match began with RSU testing the Jets keeper on two shots and Newman forcing Day to make a save early on. However, the Hillcats finally broke through in the 20th minute as Alix Tirado found the back of the net off a pass from Sarah Ovalle to give them an early 1-0 lead. In the 30th minute, the Jets would answer with a goal of their own to knot things at 1-1, where it stayed for the remainder of the period. Both sides managed to get six shots off a piece in the opening 45 minutes, with Newman making four shots on target to RSU's three.

The second half devolved into a defensive stalemate with neither side allowing much in the way of offense. In fact, the Hillcat defense suffocated the Jets, only allowing them three total shots without any on goal. Meanwhile, RSU had multiple changes with four shots on goal, including peppering the Newman keeper with three shots in span of just over two minutes halfway through the period.

The Hillcats will return home on Friday, Sept. 22 as they play host to Central Oklahoma and close out the non-conference portion of the schedule before beginning MIAA play. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
