No. 19 Hillcats Split Final Day Of Edmond Invitational

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 19 Rogers State softball (7-3) split the final day of the Edmond Invitational against Maryville (0-3) and No. 22 Oklahoma Baptist (2-4) on Saturday.
 
GAME 1 – No. 19 RSU 6, MU 2
 
The Hillcats wasted no time getting on the board in the first the game of the day as they pushed across two runs for an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bridgett Morales plated Lana Gass with a single to left. Callie Yellin then turned around and returned the favor as Morales scored on her double to left center.
 
RSU added a run in the bottom of the second to go up 3-0. Kaylee Lyon led off the inning with a single to left. Back-to-back walks to Brooke Nauman and Chelsea Spain loaded the bases. With one out, McKayla Carney earned a walk to score Lyon.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, the Hillcats pushed their lead out to 4-0. After a leadoff triple to center from Nauman, Gass brought her in with a sacrifice fly to right.
 
The Saints finally got on the board in the fifth inning as they trimmed the deficit to 4-1. A RBI ground out to second scored the run from third.
 
RSU got two insurance runs in the bottom half of the frame to push back out to 6-1. Yellin scored from third on a fielding error by the pitcher for the first run. Bobbi Leitha crossed home as Spain reached on a fielder's choice bunt for the second run.
 
Maryville scored one final run in the top of the seventh to set the final score at 6-2. The run scored on a RBI single to right.
 
Sara Llamas-Howell (3-1) earned the win going 5.0 innings while scattering two hits, one earned run and five strikeouts. Harley Culie and Jade Sanders turned in quality performances out of the bullpen, combining for 2.0 innings with three hits, one earned run and two strikeouts. Mercedes Delgado (0-1) suffered the loss.
 
GAME 2 – No. 22 OBU 5, No. 19 RSU 3
 
The second game saw Oklahoma Baptist take control early with a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A sacrifice fly to right scored the first run with the other two runs coming on a single and double to right center.
 
After three scoreless innings, the Hillcats responded with a three-run inning of their own to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning. McKayla Carney drove in both Lana Gass and Paxton Donaldson with a double to left center. Bridgett Morales returned the favor by plating Carney with a single to right.
 
The Bison answered in the top of the seventh with two runs to seal the 5-3 win. Both runs scored on bases loaded walks.
 
Kayleigh Jones (2-1) earned the complete game win. Jade Sanders (3-2) took the loss.
 
RSU will return to action on Friday, Feb. 16 as they travel to Piedmont, Okla. to compete in the Raising Canes Invitational and face off against Southeastern Oklahoma State and Southwestern Oklahoma State. First pitch against Southeastern is set for 1 p.m. with the game against SWOSU set to start at 3:30
