RSU Completes Sweep Of Newman To Open MIAA Play

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (10-3, 3-0 MIAA) completed a series sweep of Newman (2-14, 0-3 MIAA) with a 13-10 win on Sunday.
 
The Jets broke the ice first, putting up two runs in the first inning. A triple to right brought in the first run with a double to right plating the second run.
 
They added four more runs in the second to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. The first run scored from first on a throwing error by the first baseman. Two singles to right and left, respectively, scored the other three runs.
 
The Hillcats finally got on the board in the top for the fourth with a run to cut the deficit to 6-1. After Jake Mitchell reached on an error by the left fielder, Royce Tsumura brought him home from second with a single to center.
 
RSU brought the lead to one run in the fifth, trimming the margin to 6-5 with four runs. Joel Escalante uncorked a two-run blast to right center that scored Geovanni Blackshaw. Ramon Torres later plated Ryan Tiger from second with a single to left. Mitchell crossed home on a single to right from Tsumura.
 
Newman responded in the bottom half with two more runs to push back out to an 8-5 lead. A double to right center scored the first run with the other run scoring from second on an error by the shortstop.
 
In the top of the sixth, the Hillcats exploded for seven runs to take their first lead at 12-8. Tiger got things started as he drove in Blackshaw with a sacrifice fly to left. With the bases loaded and two outs, Torres stepped to the plate a launched a grand slam over the right field wall, bringing in Escalante, Matthew Delgado and Mitchell. AJ Folds capped off the frame, scoring Tsumura with a double to left.
 
The Jets got a run back in the bottom half to trim the lead to 12-9 with a RBI single to left.
 
RSU added one final insurance run in the top of the eighth to go back up 13-9. Tsumura scored from third on an error by the catcher.
 
Newman attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth with a solo home run to get within three runs at 13-10. However, they came up short as the game ended on a 4-3 double play.
 
Alek Trukki (3-0) earned the win, working 3.1 innings in relief with two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Octavio Sanchez (4) earned the save, throwing the final inning and allowing only the solo home run. Both Quinn Tocheniuk and Landon Riley were solid out of the bullpen, combining for 3.0 innings and scattering five hits with only one earned run and a strikeout. Connor Rowe (0-4) took the loss.
 
The Hillcats will step out of league play on Tuesday, Feb. 27 as they return to the Diamond Sports Complex to host Northwestern Oklahoma State in a non-conference mid-week contest. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
