Women's Soccer Drops a Close Battle to No. 24 Northwest Missouri State

NWMSU scored the game-winner with seven seconds in the first half

CLAREMORE, Okla.  — Rogers State women's soccer (1-5-4, 1-3-1) fell to No. 24  Northwest Missouri State (7-3-0, 4-1-0) 1-0 at Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon.

The matchup between Rogers State and Northwest Missouri State began with both teams actively seeking scoring opportunities. Rogers State's Khari Carreno attempted an early shot at 5:45, but it went wide. Northwest responded with a series of attempts, notably a saved shot by Ximena Arnau in the 11th minute. Rogers State goalkeeper Calais Butts made several crucial saves, including back-to-back stops against Makenna West and Emma Cook in the 15th and 17th minutes, respectively. Despite the defensive efforts, Northwest Missouri State broke through in the 44th minute when Lillie Shaw scored, giving them a 1-0 lead as the half concluded.

The Bearcats maintained offensive pressure early in the second period, with Makenna West and Abby Overbay taking quick shots, though neither found the net. Butts made a crucial save in the 64th minute, stopping a shot from Margaret Madden. Kenzie Macklin of RSU tested NWMSU's goalkeeper, Lily Ellis, twice, but Ellis successfully defended both attempts. Despite several corner kicks and shots by both teams, the period concluded without additional goals, leaving NWMSU with a 1-0 lead over the Hillcats at the end of the match.

Butts played the full 90 minutes and recorded eight saves, with five in the first half and three in the second. Brooke Hartshorn and Hannah Schulze contributed two shots in the match. Macklin led the team with three shots, two of which were on target.

Shaw made a significant impact for the Bearcats, scoring the only goal of the match and securing a game-winning goal with one of her two shots on goal. Ellis was solid in goal, recording a shutout with two saves over 90 minutes. Norah Oyler was active offensively, tying for the team lead with three shots and two shots on goal. West Arnau each contributed three shots, with West also managing to place one on target, adding depth to the team's attacking efforts.

RSU women's soccer will return to action next Friday against the Emporia State Hornets (6-3-1, 3-0-1). Kick off from the ESU Soccer Pitch in Emporia, Kansas, is slated for 2:30 p.m.
