MARYVILLE, Mo. - Rogers State baseball (19-11, 9-8 MIAA) came up short against Northwest Missouri (14-16, 8-9 MIAA) in an 8-5 extra-inning series finale on Saturday.
"Today was the perfect example of just how hard it is to sweep in this conference, especially on the road," said head coach Chris Klimas. "I thought we showed up ready to play, but we left too many opportunities out on the field. In fact, I have a few decisions I would like to have back myself. As disappointing and as much as this one hurts, winning a series on the road is always a good thing."
After two scoreless frames, RSU got the sticks going in the top of the third inning when Tyler Nelson crossed home on a balk. Weston Peninger blasted a two-run home run, bringing in Andrew Ramirez.
The Bearcats got two runs back in the fifth and sixth innings, getting within one run at 3-2.
The Hillcats responded in the top of the eighth, when Blake Nichols hit a two-run home run, driving in Jackson Romero to push the lead back out to 5-2Â
Northwest came all the way back and scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings.Â
After a scoreless 10th inning, NWMSU hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the 11th to claim the 8-5 win.Â
Connor Polli (2-0) earned the win. Landon Riley (2-2) took the loss.
RSU returns to action on Tuesday, April 1 as they travel to Edmond, Okla. for the second game of the mid-week series against Central Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
