Solid showcase from Shanks helps Hillcats complete comeback over Jets

RSU claimed the New Year's matchup, 62-53

WICHITA, Kan. — Rogers State women's basketball (5-8, 2-2 MIAA) used a second-half comeback to defeat Newman (7-5, 1-2 MIAA), 62-53, on New Year's Day inside Fugate Gymnasium. RSU capitalized with 32 points in the paint and held the Jets to just six points in the third quarter.

RSU initiated the first quarter with a strong start, as Samantha Shanks netted a 3-pointer, assisted by Kate Melton, marking the team's opening score. Following a successful layup by Shanks, RSU led briefly, showcasing an effective offensive strategy. Additional contributions came from Ella Hafer, who added a layup to keep the momentum going.

Midway through the quarter, Bailey Layman hit a critical 3-pointer, again pushing RSU ahead. However, the Jets responded with a series of successful baskets and free throws, gradually gaining the upper hand. Despite RSU's early lead and efforts to maintain it, the Jets closed the quarter strong, finishing ahead 21-14.

Newman capitalized on early turnovers in the second quarter, with Paige Craft converting a jumper shortly after a steal, contributing to a quick scoring start. RSU responded with a jumper from Hafer at the 7:30 mark, assisted by Melton, narrowing the gap temporarily. However, turnovers continued to hinder RSU, despite defensive efforts, including a block by Shanks.

Midway through the quarter, Shanks hit a crucial 3-pointer, assisted by Ataya Casaus, which helped to keep the Hillcats' offense engaged. Despite these efforts, the Jets maintained control of the scoreboard through efficient shooting, including a 3-pointer by Alexis Martin, extending their lead. RSU closed the quarter with a layup from Jaiana Wiggins, assisted by Isabella Stafford, but they trailed 36–23 at halftime.

RSU initiated a strong comeback in the third quarter, overcoming a substantial deficit by outscoring the Jets 19–6. The Hillcats capitalized on their opportunities in the paint, scoring 10 points, and added momentum with an effective fast break by Layman. Hafer contributed significantly with her scoring and defensive rebounds, while Melton provided key assists and a crucial block to keep the pressure on the home team.

As the quarter progressed, Cheyan McDaniel-Deatherage's free throws and 3-pointer tied the game at 42–42 with 11 seconds remaining. Defensive stops and crucial rebounds, including Shanks' assist on McDaniel-Deatherage's 3-pointer, were instrumental in leveling the score by the end of the quarter. The quarter concluded with both teams knotted at 42, setting up a tense final quarter.

RSU began the fourth quarter with strong momentum, quickly retaking the lead with Layman's layup at 9:01. McDaniel-Deatherage's free throws soon followed, securing a slight advantage. The team capitalized on the Jets' turnovers and defensive fouls, extending the lead with consistent free-throw shooting.

The Hillcats closed the quarter by controlling the tempo and rebounding effectively. Michelle Arens and Melton added key baskets, solidifying the lead. The game concluded with RSU securing a decisive 62-53 victory after outscoring the Jets 20-11 in the final quarter.

Shanks led the Cats with a season-best 18 points and collected a team-high six rebounds. Hafer posted 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Melton recorded nine assists and added two blocks to her stat line. McDaniel-Deatherage contributed 10 points and collected seven rebounds, supporting the team's efforts on both ends.

Alexis Martin led the Jets with 15 points, converting 5 of 8 attempts from beyond the arc. Valeriya Lioukina was dominant on the boards, collecting 13 rebounds, including six offensive. Paige Craft added 11 points and two assists, making five baskets. Jaeden McMillin contributed defensively with two steals and scored six points.

Rogers State will return to action next Wednesday against the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions. Tip-off at the Claremore Expo Center is slated for 5:30 p.m.
