Hillcats Blank Lions in Dominant Showing on Senior Day

RSU snapped a six-match losing streak with the 4-0 victory on Sunday at Soldier Field

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Hillcat Women's Soccer (5-7-2, 3-6-0 MIAA) snapped a six-game losing streak with a dominant 4-0 Senior Day victory over Missouri Southern (3-7-4, 2-4-3 MIAA) on Sunday.

With the win, Rogers State improved to 6-3-3 all-time against Southern. This marks the largest margin of victory since 2023, when they beat East Central 4-0 in Ada, and is the largest margin over an MIAA opponent since joining the league in 2019.

Prior to the match, the Hillcats honored their eight seniors: Calais Butts, Khari Carreno, Taylor Colmo, Savannah Green, Anna Hibbard, Kelsey Hogan, Te Waiariki Read and Rylee Shroder. They did not disappoint in their final game at Soldier Field, as Carenno recorded her second brace of the season, while Hibbard and Hogan both assisted on Carenno's second goal. Butts also collected her third shutout of the season with eight saves.

RSU scored three times in the first half and added another after halftime while putting 10 of their 17 shots on goal. The shutout held despite MOSO taking 22 shots, including 16 in the second half, with RSU recording eight saves.

The Hillcats built a 3-0 halftime lead behind first-half goals from Bella Holland, Carreno and Taylor Mendez. Missouri Southern forced Butts into saves in the third and 15th minutes, but Holland (7) opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and Carreno (5) finished a Lani Waddle assist in the 18th to make it 2-0. RSU played through a physical middle stretch that included several fouls on both sides, while Hogan, Holland and Carreno continued to put attempts toward goal. Mendez (2) added the third goal in the 32nd minute off Zoe Wehrman's assist, and Butts made another save in the 40th minute as the Hillcats carried the 3-0 advantage into halftime.

Carreno (6) supplied the second-half breakthrough for RSU in the 82nd minute, scoring off assists from Hibbard and Hogan to extend the lead to 4-0. Earlier, the Hillcats absorbed pressure from Southern, with Butts saving a shot in the 50th minute before RSU generated its own push through Carreno's saved attempt, a corner kick, a Katie Fisher shot and a Mendez shot on goal from the 57th to 62nd minutes. The Lions kept creating chances in the final 25 minutes, but Butts added saves in the 77th and 86th minutes as the Hillcats kept the shutout intact.

Carreno scored twice and put all four of her shots on goal. Butts (5-6-1) made eight saves over 90 minutes and recorded a shutout. Holland scored the game-winning goal among her two shots. Mendez added a goal on three shots, including two on frame.

The Hillcats will return to action next week in the "Show Me State", beginning with a clash against the Missouri Western Griffons at 7 p.m. on Thursday in St. Joseph.
