Fred Castro joined the RSU men's basketball staff in July 2007 after spending the previous six years with the University of Oklahoma women’s basketball program.
Castro worked for three years as a student manager for the Sooners while obtaining a degree in aviation. He spent the 2004-05 season as a volunteer assistant coach before being named the video and travel coordinator. The Sooners claimed three regular season conference titles and four Big 12 tournament championships during Castro’s tenure. Sherri Coale’s squads also reached the Final Four in 2002 and made back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 2006 and 2007.
Castro was charged with handling game film and team travel details in addition to his coaching duties with OU. He served as a head clinician at basketball camps for Coale and former OU men’s coach Kelvin Sampson.
Castro’s duties with the Hillcats include on-the-floor coaching, recruiting, assisting with the planning of practice and game strategies, tracking players’ academic success and monitoring student-athletes who live in on-campus housing.
Castro is a licensed professional pilot and was selected as the first student to attend the American Eagle Airlines bridge program. He married the former Cindy Hawkins on May 27, 2006.
